The Checquerboard socks are slow in the making |
Just checking in with a report that not much is going on fiber-wise except slow progress on the Checquerboard socks. I reached a snag when I was ready to start on the 2nd sock. It seems I left myself no notes or details about the first one, not even what size I was knitting. So. I had to recalculate and hope for the best. It appears that I've become more relaxed since moving to the homestead, which means my tension is looser! I'll finish up the cuffs when I see how much yarn I have left (a nice thing about toe-up socks). And no, I don't care if the colors in the check stripes match. :)

That's what I love about knitting two at a time on Magic Loop - you never have to remember what you did on the first sock!
I still do my socks cuff down, on dpns. I keep thinking I'll try another way sometime, but since I can knit socks without a pattern, if I go top down, it's too enticing to stay with what I know. I love the sock pattern. It is fun and I'm very fond of making my socks fraternal instead of identical twins. I think it adds a bit of whimsy.
Michelle, that's really a technique I need to learn, especially with my slow-pokey knitting. Surely it's on the internet by now!
Nina, I forced myself to get comfortable with both techniques! I like the idea of fraternal twin socks! Very appropriate for us creative types. :)
When you use self-patterning or self-striping yarn, you can still easily get fraternal socks with Magic Loop, it just keeps the FIT the same. Yes, it's on the internet; that's where I learned. Google Silver's Sock Class; it's a good one. Wait; here it is: http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/2mlsocks_start.htm
After years of crocheting, I womaned-up and finally started knitting. I love it, so much softer feel to me and relaxing. Mom got the very first pair of socks I ever attempted, she loves them. Had a heck of a time figuring out the heel~~geez, all I had to do was to ' follow the directions,'. Anyway, love your fraternal twins, after all, I am one.
Lol

Michelle, thank you! This is definitely going to be my next knitting project. Let's see, I started these socks almost 3 years ago, I'm over halfway done, so, I'll put in on my calendar for April 2014. :)
Dar, crochet was my first yarn experience too. Since switching to knitting, I rarely pick up a crochet hood anymore. Very neat that you're a fraternal twin!
Love those socks!!
I like that the checker colors aren't matching... if you wanted to try to adjust gauge for sock #2 you could go down a needle and see how that works...
but they're looking very nice! I also like the idea of "stopping" at the cuff of the first sock and finishing the second before ending so that you can be sure you have enough yarn :)
Pretty. I'm terrible about keeping adequate notes and every time I swear I'll do better next time, then next time....
Cathy thanks!
Kyle, I hadn't thought of that though I doubt there'll be enough difference to be noticeable when I'm wearing them. :) I will definitely keep that in mind!
Sharon, you sound just like me, LOL
What fantastic socks! (I've never seen hand-knitted ones like this!)
...and 'tant pis' if they're not exactly alike...imperfections, both in people and the fiber arts, are just the icing on the cake for me!! :)
Heather thanks. It's a Lucy Neatby pattern, which I fell in love with. I reckon I could have lined the colors up, but that's not me!
great
