Studio Progress

By Leigh

I have no progress to report on the socks, even though I got some very helpful suggestions to my problem. However, I made some headway in setting up my studio.

I decided that the first order of business would be to assemble my loom. Since it is large and the room is narrow, it's placement will determine where I put everything else.

When I was packing, I thought I was being very clever to set the loom handbook and set-up video aside, so as not to pack them away and be unable to find them when I needed them. Unfortunately, with all the moving mess, I don't have a clue as to where they are. *sigh*

Isn't that the way it always goes? I can't tell you how many times I put something is a safe place and can't remember where I've put it.
I see one of your helpers in the back ground.

They will pop up somewhere. Progress though! It's going to be awesome when you get it set up.

Losing of misplacing things while moving are typical of every move we have ever made! I dread when DH retires and we are going to move from this house to our last one. We have been here 16 years and he has 15 more to go until retirement. I try to declutter but it's tough now that we have settled in! The room looks wonderful and I love that you thought about setting up the loom first. Good thinking!!

I suddenly can't remember what kind of loom that is! If it's a Toika, it probably has numbers engraved about the rough order that you put things together. If it's a Glimakra, you can probably find something online at Vavstuga or Joanne Hall's website.

Or I guess you can unpack boxes!

Good luck!!! I like that your first thought is about putting the loom together!!

At least you've got a cat there (is it Catzee's bright eyes?) to supervise and keep an eye on outside for you at the same time!

Definitely a good move starting with the loom. It'll feel like a studio when it's put together. Hope this is going well!

By the way, I don't have much space at the sides of my loom, it's about 18" from the wall, but it's the space fore and aft that matters.

That's the way it always seems to go. How are the kitties adjusting?

Drool, drool, drool....I remember when I had studio space. (sigh) Maybe when Hizzoner retires, eh?

I see you have snoopervision so the missing ingredients will turn up. You know they're in the house - somewhere.

That's Murphy's Law indeed.

So how big is your loom, Leigh? Also, what a wonderful view you have from that room. And you're going to have wonderful light for weaving, with all those windows. What direction does it face?

I found the loom manual! Yay!

My loom is a Glimakra Standard with a 59" weaving width. That means I need approximately a 6 by 6 foot space for the loom and myself at the bench. That doesn't include clearance on the sides and back to get to the warp, treadles, etc. The challenge is that this room is only 9'4" wide, and with only one wall for shelving. I would like to be able to get around the loom comfortably and still be able to access the rest of the room without crawling over the loom. As Dorothy says though, I don't need a tremendous amount of room on the sides, and I may not get much at the back of the loom either.

The long side of the room faces roughly south, with the other window walls on the east and west. There is also a door going out to the front porch at the other end of the room, plus a small closet.

As much as I love three walls of windows, they do present a problem in terms of how to store books, yarns, and fibers without blocking them. My thinking cap is working overtime on this one!

And, yes, that's Catzee. Good eyes!

And you don't want to throw a shuttle through a window.......(grin!). How wonderful to see you making progress in setting up your studio. I don't know how you can sleep. You must be very excited. But also probably very tired!

Just catching up with this post. I have 2 Glimakra's in a long, narrow space. For me, I'd place the ratchet side nearer to the open doorway (you'll need more room there), with the beams running perpendicular to the windows (you'll likely need more room at the warp beam end, too). At least that's what I've done in several different venues with these looms.

Isn't that always the way? I'm still finding stuff from when I moved in here almost twenty years ago...

The studio is just lovely. All that light!!!
