So, my original leaf motif draft didn't work. But before giving up on leaves altogether, I did some hunting around to see if there was anything out there that would work. Here's what I eventually found.

I originally found it on Pinterest, but with no link or credit to the designer. The uploaded image was small anyway, so I kept hunting and eventually found the source. It has everything I'm looking for:
- leaf motif (so I can keep my idea of seasonally colored leaves)
- 8-shaft point twill threading (which I'm already threaded for)
- 8 treadles (I have 10, so that leaves 2 for tabby)
- treadles single shafts only (!)
My only concern (besides whether or not it would actually work) was the 5-end floats. But I figured I'll give it a try and see what I thought.

Oh, yay, happy dance, happy dance!!!
Meg, so far so good! I'll get the treadling pattern jotted down later today and give it a test run. :)
Play with your tie up a bit more, recall your twill ratios. I think you can decrease the floats and still come up with something leaf like. I added shaft 1 to treadle 6, shaft 2 to treadle 7, and shaft 3 to treadle 8. You still get a periodic 5 thread float, but not consistently through the fabric. Just play with your ratios in the tie up and you'll come up with something you like.
Valerie, I will do that! I have thought too, that I may not use these as dishtowels. Having 4 color schemes in the same pattern may lend itself to a nice wall hanging, I'm thinking.
